WinRAR was the only of two file compression programs we reviewed that included a built-in virus scanner. Although WinRAR’s overall feature set doesn’t include many bells and whistles, it does give experienced users a considerable amount of control in the Settings menu. Using the Settings menu, you can change which files WinRAR is associated with, where your default paths go, show comments and more. It seems that WinRAR gives the user a considerable amount of control over their compression. However, these are mostly advanced features and the average user will probably never need to fiddle with these settings. We would have liked WinZip to incorporate a batch convert and batch extract feature directly in the application. These features are becoming increasingly common in other file compression programs. Although you can do batch conversions and extractions in WinZip, you have to do it manually using hotkeys (shift and ctrl) in the menu system. Features: Common BitZipper features include password protection integration into Outlook and access through Windows Explorer. Perhaps one of our favorite BitZipper features is the Batch tool. The Batch tool provides the user with the ability to batch convert, extract, test, self-extract and more. BitZipper has the best batch extraction tool we evaluated. However, we found it strange that you cannot batch compress using this tool. Adding batch compression would make this tool perfect. Additionally, the self-extract feature is very easy to use and unintimidating. Even though BitZipper doesn’t include a batch compressor directly in the application, you can batch compress using Windows Explorer and hotkeys. Also, BitZipper includes functionality for virus scanning, but you have to configure it to work with your already installed antivirus program. The clean and intuitive interface, and drag and drop functionality makes it almost pleasurable to use. The only thing keeping ALZip from receiving a perfect score in this category is that it doesn’t have a Wizard. A few functions that we like about ALZip, that ultimately makes the software easier to use, include the ability to change the compression ratio, the spanned archive size and the password directly in the new file menu, and when you drag a new folder into an opened archive, the software will ask you if you want to create a new archive or just add these files to the current one ALZip will compress to a fair number of archives including ZIP, 7z and TAR. Although ALZip doesn’t write to the most formats, it does cover most of the basics. ALZip’s native archive format is ALZ, but we found there is no other file compression software that can read ALZ. So, we suggest you stick to ZIP. Besides, ZIP has better compression than ALZ. Features: You can access ALZip through Windows Explorer using the right-click functionally of your mouse. We also like how easy ALZip’s settings and preferences are. In the Preferences screen, you can set your default archive, file association, file paths and more. ALZip may not be the most powerful file compressor we reviewed, but we felt it was one of the most efficient. We did notice one useless, but fun feature associated with ALZip. For a free program, 7-Zip is a decent file archiver that can compress and extract a variety of archive and file types. However, 7-Zip’s standard feature set and overall user friendliness kept it from ranking higher. Features: 7-Zip includes a number of common file compression features like password protection, multi-volume support and integration with Outlook. However, 7-Zip doesn’t have anything particular that makes it stand out among the rest of the file compression pack. Like most file compression software, 7-Zip does have full support with Windows Explorer and you can access almost any 7-Zip function by using right-click. You can also batch compress or extract using hotkeys and drag and drop; however, 7-Zip does not include this feature directly in the application. Additionally, 7-Zip supports the creation of self-extracting archives, but you have to download additional modules or plugins from the 7-Zip website. At the time, WinAce was able to create a better compression ratio than standard ZIP archives and was preferable to many in the 'computer' community. However, we found that although WinAce functioned properly, ZIP compression– the most popular archive–is less than stellar. For the most part, it feels like the software is always encouraging you to use the ACE format instead of ZIP and some features like converting archives are specific to the ACE format. Features: WinAce supports most of the common features we’ve come to expect from file compression software. It can integrate into Outlook, encrypt your archives, split archives and create self-extracting archives. With regard to compressed executables WinAce will allow you to run the application or setup form within the program before completely extracting it to your hard drive. We really liked that you could batch compress archives from the new archive screen and the information box that is displayed in the left-hand side of the screen will display everything you need to know about an archive like its type, compression ratio and the number of files in the archive. However, we did have some difficulty finding the information feature. In the menu it’s quite nondescript. You have to go to “view” in the menu and select “extra information.” We actually just stumbled upon it while searching through WinAce’s menu. We also found that although WinAce doesn’t have a thumbnail viewing option it does include its own quick viewer for most graphic and image files. You can password protect archives, convert ZIP to SITX, and integrate StuffIt with your virus scanner. That’s about it. One function we really like about StuffIt, that isn’t common in all file compression software, is the ease of use of their batch compression. When you create a new archive, you can just add more files to the archive list. From there, StuffIt will compress all folders and files into one batch archive. Stuffit Standard neglects many of the features we’ve come to expect in most file compression software including creating self-extracting archives. Additionally, StuffIt actively encourages users to use their proprietary SITX compression format and therefore, some features are only fully compatible with SITX. TurboZip is a decent file compression program that performs most of the functions we’ve come to expect from a typical archiver. However, some major issues that hold TurboZip Express back is its lack of compatible formats, it only compresses and extracts ZIP and CAB files, and it has some consistency problems we experienced while using the “batch extract” feature. TurboZip Express also has a big brother program called TurboZip Suite. TurboZip Suite is a file archiver and cataloging tool that supports extremely large archives, more archive formats and archive cataloging. Features: Like most file compression software programs, TurboZip Express can create and extract ZIP files. Additional features include the ability to password protect your archives, create multi-volume archives and email archives through Outlook. TurboZip’s configuration menu is great for power users. There are a number of settings you can change or modify to suit your compression needs. One obviously missing feature is the ability to create self-extracting archives. TurboZip is the only file compression program we reviewed that didn’t include this function. Unfortunately, that advanced functionality makes Quick Zip difficult to use and intimidating to inexperienced users. In other words, to use Quick Zip, you have to already be very familiar with file compression, especially since there is very little online help or customer support. Features: Quick Zip is the most powerful free file compression program we reviewed. Quick Zip easily creates and extracts dozens of archives. In addition to including password protection, drag and drop support, archive splitting and email integration, Quick Zip has an integrated FTP; it can batch extract and convert archives and supports thumbnail viewing. Additionally, in the settings menu, you can set directory preferences, configure a virus scanner and more. However, we were surprised to find that Quick Zip does not integrate with Windows Explorer. There is no right-click functionality. Additionally, we found that when you convert an archive to another archive, Quick Zip just defaults your new archive to the same folder your old archive was in.
